Difference Between Castration and Sterilization

Dr. Jutta Ziegler explains that during castration, the testicles (in male dogs) or the ovaries (in female dogs) are removed. This renders the animal infertile. In sterilization, on the other hand, only the vas deferens or fallopian tubes are severed. This method is generally not preferred, as it may not produce the desired behavioral changes, such as suppressing estrus or preventing male dogs from marking their territory.
 

Reasons for Neutering

Neutering can be a sensible measure for many pet owners, particularly to avoid the stress associated with a female dog’s heat cycle or to control undesirable behavior in intact male dogs. In cats, neutering is particularly important to prevent uncontrolled breeding, as cats often have outdoor access.
 

Methods of Neutering

There are two main methods of neutering: surgical and chemical. In the surgical method, the reproductive organs are removed, while chemical neutering uses hormone injections or chips to suppress the production of sex hormones.
 

The Hormone Chip

The hormone chip is implanted between the animal’s shoulder blades and continuously releases hormones that inhibit testosterone production. Depending on the chip, the effect lasts six or twelve months. Initially, there may be a short-term increase in testosterone levels, which can temporarily lead to aggressive behavior.
 

Advantages and Disadvantages of Castration

Surgical neutering is irreversible, meaning the procedure cannot be reversed. Chemical methods offer the advantage of reversibility but can also cause side effects such as weight gain and behavioral changes. Incontinence is also a possible consequence in neutered male and female dogs.
 

Age-Appropriate Neutering

For cats, it is recommended to perform neutering after their teeth have come in, which is around seven months of age. For dogs, especially larger breeds, one should wait until they are fully physically developed—often until about three years of age. Neutering too early can impair physical and psychological development.
 

Neutering of Shelter Animals

For shelter animals, neutering is often necessary to prevent uncontrolled breeding. Unlike privately owned animals, shelter animals cannot always be supervised, which is why neutering may be advisable.
 

Legal Regulations

In Germany, the Animal Welfare Act prohibits the neutering of healthy dogs. In Austria, the regulations are somewhat more flexible, as neutering is permitted to prevent reproduction; however, the ban on healthy animals applies here as well.
 

Ethical Considerations

Dr. Ziegler emphasizes the ethical responsibility of pet owners. Neutering should be carefully considered, as it can have significant effects on the animal. Often, unwanted behavior can be better managed through training and socialization than through neutering.
 

Recommendations for Pet Owners
