Indoor Cats - The KRATSSER Principle, Part 2

What does the abbreviation “KRATSSER” stand for? In today's article, we'd like to take a closer look with you at the first four letters of the Kratsser Principle.

K for Cat Buddy    
According to cat expert Andrea Zutz, cats should not be kept alone. Although they are solitary hunters (unlike pack hunters), they are not loners. Cats naturally seek out contact with other cats, as “Cat Guru” Paul Leyhausen has already discovered.
Tip from the Kratsser Principle: Keep at least two or more cats together—this leads to well-balanced, content cats in your household! The Cats-pert explains how to go about this in her book.

R for Territory or “The Scent of Cats”             
The fact that cats mark their territory when they’re outdoors has likely become well known thanks to the observations of Paul Leyhausen, the “Cat Pope.” Indoor cats are no different. Their own scent—and the fact that their territory smells of it—is very important to cats, as it gives them a sense of security.
Tip from the Kratsser Principle: Allow your cat to spread its scent throughout the home by rubbing against objects and scratching in appropriate places.

A for Species-Appropriate Nutrition                                     
By nature, cats drink almost nothing at all; this is rooted in their evolution, because as animals of the steppes or deserts, it makes perfect sense for them to meet (almost) all of their fluid needs through their food.
Tip from the Kratsser Principle: For the reasons mentioned above, a suitable diet for cats is raw meat (BARF—biologically appropriate raw feeding) or high-quality wet food.

T for Toilets                                                         
Standard litter boxes are usually too small; if there are multiple cats in the household, they shouldn’t be able to block each other’s path to the litter boxes. Cats prefer fine-grained litter or bamboo litter.
Tip from the Kratsser Principle: There should always be one more litter box than there are cats in the household. Learn what to look for when choosing litter boxes and how to make these “little spots” appealing.
