Zeolite and Bentonite: A Brief Explanation

The zeolite mineral clinoptilolite and bentonite (montmorillonite) explained in a nutshell!

The product Dr. Ziegler’s Zeolite consists of 100% of the natural mineral clinoptilolite (zeolite family). The mineral is mined in Slovenia under strict controls.

Structure: Zeolites are natural aluminosilicate minerals. Due to their porous structure with numerous pores and channels, they possess an exceptional ability to bind substances, particularly heavy metals and other pollutants.

Zeolites are a distinct group of minerals consisting of 72 different minerals. Clinoptilolite is often referred to as a zeolite, but this is not entirely correct, since the term “zeolite” encompasses all natural AND synthetic zeolites. However, these two groups of substances are not comparable, as they form in different ways and also possess different physical properties.

The structure of clinoptilolite consists of a framework of tetrahedra whose aluminum and silicon atoms are linked to one another by oxygen atoms. This crystal lattice contains open cavities in the form of cages and channels. Substances are adsorbed into these cages. In return, clinoptilolite releases its free cations (Na+, K+, Ca+, and Mg+). The aluminum atoms, which are firmly embedded in the lattice, are non-exchangeable. Therefore, the frequently expressed concern that ingesting clinoptilolite will burden the body with aluminum is unfounded.

 The main function of clinoptilolite is performed by silicon dioxide (SiO₂). This molecule, also known as silicic acid, is a fundamental element of life. Silicon promotes the formation of all tissues in the body and activates cellular metabolism and cell growth. Silicon is particularly essential for the development of bone and connective tissue.

Side effects? Only molecules with a diameter smaller than the zeolite’s pore openings are bound. Therefore, clinoptilolite also belongs to the group of molecular sieves. The frequently expressed concerns that clinoptilolite might impair the effectiveness of medications are unfounded, as the molecules of medications are far too large to be incorporated into the crystal lattice.

Formation: Volcanic eruptions produce large quantities of ash and tuff, which are dispersed over land and water. Over time, the ash and tuff deposited on land are altered by weathering. Surface water and groundwater permeate the deposits, enriching them with calcium, sodium, and potassium, as well as trace elements. The infiltrating water also creates the cavities necessary for the crystallization of zeolites. Clinoptilolite is found in nearly all volcanic regions of the world. For this reason, it is also generally referred to as a volcanic rock. There are approximately 180 large, known deposits worldwide, some of which are of enormous size.

The physical mechanism of action of clinoptilolite in the body:

  1. In the digestive tract, it acts like dietary fiber with a highly absorbent surface effect, releasing various minerals and trace elements.
     
  2. Relief for the liver and large intestine through the adsorption (binding) of toxins: 

    chemicals (preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals), medications, metabolic waste products (ammonia), mycotoxins, and aflatoxins.

    By binding to these toxins, they are prevented from being reabsorbed (enterohepatic circulation) and can be excreted through the intestines.
     
  3. Regulation of acid-base balance by binding excess acids from protein and nitrogen compounds
    .
  4. Homeostasis of the intestinal flora through the absorption of toxins from pathogenic microorganisms. By inactivating these pathogenic substances, they can no longer attack the body (e.g., the intestinal barrier), and a regulatory effect on an overactive immune system (autoimmune diseases) is initiated.
     
  5. Optimization of fermentation and enzyme activities through the neutralization of toxins that disrupt and hinder smooth enzyme production (fermentation and putrefaction processes are reduced).
     
  6. Neutralization of free radicals through binding (adsorption). Free radicals, which contribute to the development of chronic diseases (such as cancer), are bound by clinoptilolite and neutralized through ion exchange.

The difference from healing clay (alumina) is that clinoptilolite absorbs the waste products of intestinal fungi (e.g., Candida) and does not bind intestinal bacteria indiscriminately.

For animals, the zeolite powder should also be stirred into a small amount of water, meat broth, or tea using a ceramic or plastic spoon before being added to the feed (electrolytic processes occur only in aqueous solutions). It should be administered 1–2 times daily; for sensitive animals, the dose can initially be split into two half-doses and gradually increased (over the course of one week). A typical course of treatment lasts about 4–8 weeks and can be carried out, for example, in the spring and fall. For chronic conditions, regular administration should continue for at least 12 weeks or even longer (please consult your therapist regarding this).

Zeolite powderRecommended dosage for animals for internal use  
 1 gram (1 measuring spoon) per 10 kg of body weight; mix with water and add to the feed. To ease the animal into the treatment, give half the dosage for the first 3 days, then the full dosage starting on the 4th day.

Since the powder dissolved in water is mixed into the feed, the calculated amount can be exceeded by 3 to 5 times without causing any problems. Clinoptilolite not required by the body is excreted in the feces. For animals prone to constipation, sufficient water should be added to the food.

Side effects from taking clinoptilolite are rare; however, the detoxification process may cause skin blemishes, joint discomfort, and headaches for a few days, and it may also darken the feces.

An interaction—that is, a reduction or enhancement of a medication’s effects—with the simultaneous intake of clinoptilolite is not possible. The molecular sizes of most conventional medications are too large and cannot be incorporated into the crystal lattice of clinoptilolite. 

Clinoptilolite can be combined with colloidal silver, plant extracts, and essential oils—that is, administered simultaneously—since clinoptilolite acts as a carrier (vector)
and facilitates their delivery into the cell. In addition, the tolerability of alcoholic plant extracts, such as cilantro, is improved.

For skin problems, open cuts and abrasions, torn claws, insect bites, and allergic skin reactions, clinoptilolite can be applied topically multiple times as a powder or thickened suspension (cover with gauze or a bandage). In these cases, the product Dr. Ziegler’s Skin Powder can also be used, as it is easy to dose.

Zeolite and bentonite are both known to be effective at binding pollutants. The difference lies in their mineralogical structure. Zeolite, a microporous tuff, has a crystal lattice structure with cavities, while bentonite, a clay mineral, has a layered structure that swells in water and forms a gel film. This is also known as a montmorillonite gel protective film.
