Description
Horses have fascinated me since I was a child. Even as preschoolers, we used to play “horse owner and horse.” That meant my older brother was the coachman and I was the horse. He harnessed me to the homemade wooden gig. I had a wooden stick in my mouth as a bit, and two strings were attached to it as driving reins. Of course, I felt like a thoroughbred horse, and my pride demanded that I show no weakness. Today I know that this was a good lesson in putting myself in a horse’s shoes and, through that, gaining a deep understanding.
But the beauty of horses has also inspired me from that time until now. As a painter and sculptor, it’s always a challenge for me to artistically capture the charisma, the power, and the beauty of a horse’s movement.
Not only as a painter but also as a rider, I’ve gained countless experiences over the years on the topic of “humans and horses.” And if it’s true that we usually learn from our mistakes, then I’ve probably learned a great deal.
This is where humor comes into play: It’s a good way to forgive oneself for mistakes and to better retain what one has learned.
In many cases, I’ve experienced the situations depicted in the cartoons in this book firsthand and recorded them in the stories of “Trixi and Wastl.” Fortunately, my partner Gabriele shares my passion for horses. As an editor, she always finds a simple and clear way to express my themes.
