Krill refers to small marine organisms—tiny crustaceans—from which krill oil is extracted. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is the best-known species of these small crustaceans, but there are also North Atlantic and Pacific krill.
Krill filters phytoplankton from seawater. It is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and contains small amounts of the antioxidant astaxanthin. The fatty acids in krill oil are bound to phospholipids, making them more easily absorbed by the body.
