Most Common Joint Problems in Dogs and Cats
Dr. Jutta Ziegler explains that the most common joint problems in dogs are hip dysplasia (HD), elbow dysplasia (ED), spondylosis, herniated discs, and general osteoarthritis. These problems occur less frequently in cats, but they, too, can suffer from osteoarthritis.
Prone Breeds and Causes
Large dog breeds are particularly susceptible to joint problems. An improper diet with too much energy causes dogs to grow too quickly, leading to lower bone density and excessive strain on the joints. Genetic factors also play a role. In cats, lack of exercise and excessive starch in their food are common causes of joint problems.
Symptoms of Joint Problems
Typical signs of joint problems in dogs and cats include limping after playing, difficulty lying down and getting up, and trouble getting in and out of the car. Dr. Jutta Ziegler emphasizes that pet owners should watch for these symptoms.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Joint problems are typically diagnosed using X-rays, MRIs, and a neurological examination. Dr. Ziegler combines conventional medical diagnostics with naturopathic therapies. Pain relievers such as medical cannabis and frankincense, as well as dietary supplements like green-lipped mussel powder and collagen hydrolysate, are used to strengthen the joints and relieve pain.
Prevention and Nutrition
To prevent joint problems, Dr. Ziegler recommends ensuring a balanced diet. Especially during their first year of life, dogs should not be fed starchy food. The BARF diet (Biologically Artgerecht Roh-Fütterung) is ideal for this purpose. If you’d like to learn more about BARF, feel free to check out our BARF blog posts. Omega-3 fatty acids are also crucial for joint health.
Exercise and Physical Therapy
Exercise is important for joint health, but care should be taken not to overexert young dogs. A good physical therapist can relieve pain and improve mobility through targeted massages and physical therapy.
Surgical Procedures and Alternative Treatments
Surgical procedures are only necessary in severe cases. Dr. Ziegler prefers alternative methods such as gold implantation, which is minimally invasive and can relieve chronic pain. Orthopedic beds and orthoses can also help relieve pressure on the joints.
Success Stories
Dr. Ziegler shares two success stories from her practice. A young Rottweiler that was overweight and suffered from joint problems became pain-free again thanks to a change in diet and omega-3 supplements. A 16-year-old cat with severe spondylosis was able to regain its mobility through the use of cannabis and frankincense.
Conclusion
Proper nutrition, appropriate exercise, and naturopathic treatments can greatly contribute to joint health in dogs and cats. Pet owners should watch for signs of joint problems and take action early.
